The GENII group has never sold a business and hence I believe it was the best home for a company with a long family tradition.

Dear Andreas, tell us about your company and your story prior to becoming a GENII company?

MELOS was founded in 1988 by Herbert Mayer, focusing on developing Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) tailored for large laboratory groups. Our software excels in managing complex workflows and scaling to handle over 50,000 orders daily, thanks to our unique Master Data Server (MSDS). We also successfully launched a digital order entry solution and platform for reporting and invoicing called MDN – MELOS Digital Network.

I joined MELOS in 2002 as a consultant and became CEO in 2007. As Mr. Mayer’s son-in-law, we maintained MELOS as a family firm. However, with our children pursuing different career paths, we needed to secure a long-term future for the company.

Why did you choose to join the GENII group? Did you have any hesitations?

GENII Group’s track record of never selling a business aligned perfectly with our desire to preserve MELOS’s long family tradition. Their vision of building a laboratory cluster under the GENII umbrella was particularly appealing, as it gives us a significant advantage over competitors. The entrepreneurial freedom they offer was also a key factor in our decision.

How did the acquisition process go?

We initiated the process by presenting our business plan in late 2021. The GENII team approached the transaction professionally, asking direct and relevant questions. We finalized the deal swiftly in 2022, agreeing on a buy-and-build strategy to boost sales and strengthen our market position in Europe. GENII’s long-term perspective allowed them to offer the best value to us as owners

How do you experience your own autonomy and go-to-market freedom?

The GENII Group maintains a highly entrepreneurial structure, allowing us significant freedom to develop our company. An added benefit is access to their extensive network of potential customers across Europe, which has been invaluable for our growth.

What are the advantages of belonging to a larger group of software companies, the GENII Software Group?

A big advantage is the collaborative product development across the group, especially in integrating cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and advanced security features. GENII respects our senior management team and their achievements, creating new roles and integrating both young and experienced experts in innovation teams.

Another factor that attracted us is access to GENII’s M&A competencies, which has already helped us expand our lab cluster to four companies.

Additionally, we were able to leverage their vast network of potential customers throughout Europe to achieve rapid growth.
